The timber produced in the Yoshino region, hailed as one of Japan's three major artificial beauty forests, has been recognized as a Japanese heritage for its historical story, "Nurtured by the forest, the lives and hearts of those who nurtured the forest ~ Yoshino, the birthplace of the beautiful afforestation legacy ~".The primary characteristics include the production of timber with fine, even annual ring density and high strength due to dense planting and repeated thinning and pruning. This results in wood with few knots. Additionally, it is distinguished by its deep coloration and unique aroma.
This is a result of centuries-long cultivation of cedar (sugi) and cypress (hinoki), which not only possess beauty but also excellent durability. Consequently, they have been used as construction materials for historical structures such as shrines and temples.
The grain of Yoshino wood is unique to each piece; its beauty is reminiscent of a natural work of art. From cultivation to harvesting, it embodies an eternal beauty, woven together by the love, skill, and dedication of our predecessors and the collaboration with nature itself.
In recent years, Yoshino wood has been valued not only for its use as a structural material in homes but also for its texture and artistic qualities. It is utilized not just in traditional Japanese homes and furniture but also in modern interiors and architecture. With its distinctive character and high quality, Yoshino wood continues to create and bring forth new value.
Japanese forestry is facing several critical challenges. One of the main issues is the lack of proper forest management, which leads to the absence of timber harvesting from the mountains. Behind this lies the decreased motivation of forest owners due to factors such as the decline in market prices, reduced demand (due to the import of timber from foreign countries, changes in housing styles, and a decrease in the number of housing starts). The timber that our ancestors carefully nurtured over time, even when reaching the point of harvest, is often forced into transactions at low prices. This situation, where the funds cannot be reinvested into the mountains, makes proper forest maintenance challenging and has resulted in many forests being abandoned and left untended. Additionally, the aging workforce in forestry, a profession that involves dangerous tasks, along with a shortage of workers, is expected to become an increasingly serious issue in the future. Recently, signs of increased demand for domestic timber emerged due to the 'wood shock'. However, challenges in the timber distribution system became evident, preventing the industry from capitalizing on this trend.
In response to these challenges, the government and other entities are implementing various initiatives. Measures to secure and develop labor include increasing opportunities for hiring and training young people, women, and foreign workers. For the proper management and utilization of forests, measures are being taken by local governments and forestry cooperatives to manage forests with unknown ownership and promote the effective use of forest resources. Furthermore, to enhance the value of domestic timber, policies are being implemented to encourage the use of wood in buildings, and awareness campaigns are also being conducted to deepen consumers' understanding of domestic wood.
However, fundamental solutions to these problems have not yet been achieved, and without significant changes, Japan's timber industry is at risk of disappearing.
